The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) has called on the state government to collaborate with the private sector to establish more primary food processing and packaging centers in the state, particularly in areas with high agricultural productivity.

This resolution followed a motion moved by Effiong Johnson, Chief Whip of the House and seconded by Uwem Imo-Ita , member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency during Tuesday’s plenary.

Johnson highlighted the state’s agricultural renaissance, noting that many residents are now engaged in farming, which is expected to lead to a significant harvest this year and in the years to come.

He emphasized the need to increase the market value of agricultural produce by transforming raw materials into processed goods, thereby achieving comprehensive food security and sufficiency.

Johnson further noted that the House of Assembly is committed to creating more job opportunities within the agricultural sector through active partnerships with small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) involved in food processing and packaging.

In response, Udeme Otong,  the Speaker of the House, directed the House Committees on Agriculture and Commerce/Industry to collaborate with the Akwa Ibom State Investment Corporation (AKICORP) and the Ministry of Agriculture to establish food processing and packaging centers in the state, with the submission of a report within one month.

In the meantime, plenary session has been adjourned to reconvene on March 24, 2026, at the meeting chamber of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Uyo.
