Umar Namadi has granted state pardon to 12 convicted inmates in Jigawa State, in what the government described as a humanitarian gesture in the spirit of the holy month of Ramadan and the forthcoming Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
The decision was announced in a statement on Thursday by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Bello Abdulkadir Fanini.
According to the statement, the governor approved the pardon following recommendations from the Jigawa State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy in line with Section 5(1) of the Advisory Council of Prerogative of Mercy Law, Cap A2, Laws of Jigawa State 2012.
Fanini explained that the action was taken under the powers granted to the governor by Section 212(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
He noted that the decision was aimed at promoting reconciliation and facilitating the reintegration of the affected inmates into society.

The beneficiaries of the pardon are Ibrahim Adamu Isa, Sa’idu Umar, Adamu Musa, Habibu Musa, Yusuf Ahmed, Shu’aibu Adamu, Abdullahi Ya’u, Yahaya Jana’u, Abdul Hamisu, Garba Miko, Salisu Isa and Aliyu Ibrahim.
Fanini said the inmates were considered for clemency after demonstrating good behaviour during their incarceration and having only a few months left to complete their jail terms.
He urged the beneficiaries to reciprocate the government’s gesture by remaining law-abiding and avoiding any actions that could bring them back into conflict with the law.
“The gesture reflects the government’s commitment to compassion, peace and community harmony,” the commissioner said.
