The fallen walls of the Ikoyi Cemetery, the replacement of which lingered for several months, have finally been rebuilt.
For context, the elitist cemetery, which houses the remains of many high and mighty, is located within the jurisdiction of Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Authority (LCDA).
Sometime last year, a heavy wind pulled down a section of the fence that faces the main road to the old Dodan Barracks and the ever-busy Immigration/passport office. The fallen walls threw open the cemetery to the glare of the public. A large portion of the tombs could be seen from the road. It also took the relevant authorities months to come up with a temporary measure.
Black nylons were used to cordon off the sacred community. The nylons could not withstand, for too long, the vagaries and buffeting of harsh winds. They began to tear to the point that they became an eye-sore.
Yours Sincerely was moved to do a comment published in BusinessDay Sunday of December 28, 2025 with the headline, ‘Disrespecting the dead at Ikoyi cemetery’.
To the chagrin of many, the torn nylons were again, replaced with another set of nylons raising question as to why the authorities could not do a block fence.
At a recent strategic breakfast round table on participatory governance organised by the Office of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Yours Sincerely also raised the cemetery issue, asking the officials what must have been responsible for that level of negligence in a “City of Excellence?”
Government officials present had alluded to a possible bureaucracy around funds release, assuring however, that actions would be taken on it soonest.
True to those assurances, the walls have eventually been rebuilt, giving the facility a fantastic look. Kudos to all those who made this development possible.
