Wisdom Edward, president, Orumba North and South Local Government Association of Anambra State in South Africa, says the group will award scholarship to 20 primary school pupils in the state.
Edward said this on Sunday in Johannesburg, South Africa, on the sidelines of the celebration of the Orumba new yam festival.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria that the pupils would be selected from some schools in Orumba North and South Local Governments of Anambra.
“The association will pick 20 students from 20 schools in Orumba North and South Local Governments. The aim is to pay their school fees until they finish primary education and thereafter, we will take it up and see how we can assist them in secondary schools,” he said.
The president also said executive members of the association would liaise with council chairmen at home to plan on other areas of assistance.
He said the association would also organise football tournaments in their communities in December to identify talents among boys and girls.
“We want to produce good footballers like Willy Okpara, an ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper, and an indigene of Orumba. We have the talents and it is through this kind of competition among our youths in December that we can discover some of these talents,” he said.
The association attaches importance to the new yam festival because the two local governments constitute part of the food basket of Anambra, he said.
